The redevelopment of building infrastructure at Jan Mayen comprises a new main station and supporting facilities designed for long-term operation in one of Norway’s most remote and challenging environments. The development includes a new main station building providing accommodation, operational and welfare facilities, as well as separate emergency accommodation, two garage buildings, two boathouses, a technical building and a new facility for Space Norway.
Jan Mayen is a volcanic island in the North Atlantic with a high level of seismic activity. Structures on the island are exposed to a demanding combination of earthquake actions, extreme winds, snow and volcanic ash. Located approximately 1,000 km from mainland Norway, with highly constrained transport and construction logistics, the project requires robust structural solutions and extensive use of prefabrication, combined with close interdisciplinary coordination throughout design and construction.
